Dear Visitors,
As the Mayor of Vác I would like to welcome you. We are honored that you visited our website, and we thank you for your interest in our thousand-year-old city. Please allow me to introduce you to Vác and tell you why it is worth a visit.
Our city can be found in one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, the Danube
Bend, approximately 30 kilometers north of Budapest, where the Börzsöny, Cserhát,
and Naszály Mountains and the Gödöllo Hills meet the Pest Plain. Vác can easily
be reached by train, boat, and car, or by using the scenic bicycle trail along
the Danube. From Vác, the "Capital of the Danube Bend", you can easily get
to other historic places in Hungary, like the cities of Szentendre and Esztergom,
or the Castle of Visegrád.
As you walk around in the city, do not miss our architectural sights - the monumental cathedral, the Triumphal Arch, and last but not least, our recently rebuilt baroque main square, which is the venue for public concerts and other performances. Discover our old, narrow streets and imagine the old life of the city around you, where our ancestors used to walk.
Vác has a rich variety of cultural programs for its visitors in every season.
Our museums, cultural house, swimming pool, parks, and authentic restaurants
provide many choices for recreation throughout the year. At the end of July we
commemorate the 1764 visit of Empress Maria Theresa to Vác with an annual three-day
festival called the "Váci Világi Vigalom". During this event we offer
performances of many kinds from classical music to rock concerts, from exhibitions
to theater
plays, in various indoor and outdoor locations throughout the city. We maintain
relationships with seven sister cities in other countries and also have cultural
ties with the Japanese city of Yurihonjo. This festival is also the time to foster
our cooperation with these cities by inviting their musical groups and performers
to participate in the festival and share their traditions and culture with us.
Please accept our invitation, and spend some time in Vác. Our city and our residents have the reputation of being hospitable. We look forward to seeing you, your family, and friends in Vác and hope you will depart with pleasant memories you can share with others.
